A Cosmetic Role of Toothpaste:
The modern day toothpaste performs two activities related to cosmetic and hygienic fields. The cosmetic field is looked after by helping remove stains on teeth due to drinking tea, coffee or smoking of tobacco restoring brightness of teeth one needs to showcase the bright teeth, while smiling. The hygienic activity is carried out with removal of food particles sticking on teeth responsible for bacterial action to produce decaying acids in the oral cavity and bad breath. The decaying activity acids, is further reduced by presence of fluoride in the toothpaste.
The function of brushing with tooth paste is to prevent formation of tartar from the un-removed plaque. To carry out the above tasks the effective toothpaste contains abrasive to achieve scrubbing effect, detergent to generate foam, a thickener to give semisolid texture, a humectants for keeping the paste moist during storage, flavouring agents to give a pleasant smell after toothpaste brushing, artificial sweetener to mask the taste of other ingredients.
To further the action of toothpaste mouthwash preparations have been designed, which contains active ingredients putting restrictions on the growth of oral bacteria for duration of 8 hours, flavouring and sweetening agents to improve taste and freshness of the mouth hiding the bad breath. Combination of toothpaste after meals and use of mouth wash in between ensures better oral health through out the day.
Electric toothbrush is an economically priced device operated by 12 volts rechargeable and capable of making oscillating motions for calibrated two minutes duration and having interchangeable toothbrush attachments. One uses it by putting toothpaste on the toothbrush and switching on the device and pressing the toothbrush against internal and external surfaces of teeth after two minutes the operations stop automatically.
